Relaxation & Proprioception - Intro to TTouch & The Surefoot Equine Stability System: June 13/14, 2020

Instructor: Mandy Pretty - Tellington TTouch Instructor & Accredited 4 Hoof Surefoot Professional                              Location: Coldstream, BC (The Icelandic Horse Farm)

Discover simple and effective techniques for enhancing your horse's relaxation, release of tension, and overall balance with a combination of Tellington TTouch bodywork (TTouch) exercises and the revolutionary Surefoot Equine Stability Program pads.

TTouch uses light, non-invasive and non-habitual movements of the tissue and extremities to release tension in the body while affecting change at the level of the nervous system.  Everyday horse people and life long professionals alike can utilize these simple exercises into their horsemanship to achieve better posture, a reduction in tension, and overall improvement in behaviour.

The Surefoot Equine Stability Program is a unique, innovative way for the horse to be his own teacher. Developed by Wendy Murdoch, this revolutionary way of improving your horse’s balance, confidence, movement and performance shows that the horse is always present and ready to learn if we can only find ways to access his intelligence. This approach allows the horse to experience his own habitual patterns of movement and provides the horse with an opportunity to explore and learn new ways of standing on his feet and utilizing the ground for greater ease, comfort and confidence.

With SURE FOOT, using a variety of stability and balance pads, horses discover how they are habitually standing. The pad gives under the horse’s weight bringing his attention to where he is placing his feet and providing new information to the balancing part of his nervous system. With this awareness the horse explores, shifts and alters his habitual patterns of standing and moving by himself, ultimately choosing a more secure and effective way to stand and move. The horse retrains himself to stand better without human interference.

In addition to reprogramming the balancing portion of the brain, there is obviously an affect on the instinctive part of the brain. While it cannot be fully explained, there is a calming effect, shifting the horse from the fight & flight reaction or sympathetic autonomic nervous system (ANS) response to the grazing or parasympathetic (ANS) response. Some horses experience an even deeper level of relaxation believed to be caused by a release of endorphins somehow triggered by standing on the pads. In some cases a gentle swaying is observed while the horse is standing on the pads.

These exercises are a great way to enhance your relationship with your horse, increase the efficacy of current body work routines, and improve balance, proprioception and performance.

Bring your own horse or learn the techniques on one of the farm's cooperative, gentle, horses.

Connected Riding Intro - with founder Peggy Cummings:  July 31- August 1, 2020

Instructors: Peggy Cummings

Location: Vernon, BC (The Icelandic Horse Farm)

Connected Riding shows you how to ride with more ease and elegance.

Ride like you felt as a child – free, unfettered, fun! Become one with your horse’s movement.

Improve your horse’s posture to carry your weight more easily.

Learn posture that helps your horse move.

Peggy Cummings is a transformer: a conductor of information that changes how people ride, how they feel in their bodies, and how they perceive their horses and life in general. She is an innovator: a creator of exercises designed to help horse and human dance together easily, efficiently, and effectively. She is a master rider and teacher, and has the same passion and perseverance for her mission now as when she began it over 40 years ago. Peggy’s hope is that eventually the rigid, traditional ways of teaching riding will give way to the flowing, natural movement taught through Connected Riding®. She knows it will take considerable work, but she’s making headway.

In front of a packed lecture hall in Louisville, Kentucky, she asks, “Who wants to learn how to dance?” As hands raise one by one, she can’t help but smile. “All right then, let’s begin.”   Beautiful, homemade, lunches included.
